Penedo is one of the jewels of Brazilian colonial heritage. Founded by the Portuguese in 1613 near the mouth of the majestic river São Francisco that flows 2700 km deep into the sertão, Penedo has Baroque churches that are amongst the most beautiful in the country and a population that is extremely hospitable and proud of its heritage.
You will enjoy :

  • going by boat from Piaçabuçu upto the mouth of the river São Francisco or a stroll to Santana from São Francisco, on the other side of the river where you can buy pottery.
  • visiting the Nossa Senhora do Corrente church (next to the colonial pousada) considered to be one of the most beautiful churches in Brazil. This church was built by the André de Lemos Gonzaga family in 1765. As abolitionists, members of this family helped slaves who escaped by providing them forged documents  and giving them refuge in a hiding place behind the church altar.
Culinary specialities : jacaré ao molho de coco (caiman in coconut based sauce) in the restaurant Forte da Rocheira.
